On Tue., June 9, 2026, there will be a municipal election to fill the positions of Select Board Member 3 and Regional School Unit #12 Board Member; a referendum on the RSU #12 school budget; and a state primary election. The deadline to change parties or withdraw from a party to become unenrolled and still vote in the state primary is Thu. 5/21/26 in-person at the town office, or Mon. 5/25/26 online. Absentee ballots can be requested by filling out an online application; completing, printing, and sending a paper application to the Town Office; calling the Town Office at (207) 882-8477 x.3; or in person at the town office. In person absentee voting at the Town Office will begin on 5/12/26. The deadline to request an absentee ballot or vote absentee in person is Thu., 6/4/26. Please see the Absentee Voting Notice for details.
The Select Board is holding two public forums to share the draft Town Meeting Warrant and get feedback before they finalize it by the deadline of 6/2/26. These sessions will also serve as Planning Board hearings on proposed land use ordinances and ordinance amendments that will likely be on the final warrant. Both sessions will be at 6:00 PM at the Old Town Hall on 1217 Main Rd.
The Annual Town Meeting will consider and vote on a list of budget and other matters presented on the Warrant, which will be finalized and posted in early June. All registered Westport Island voters may attend and vote, and a voter registrar will be available to register residents.
Join the Conservation Commission to help clean up this beautiful island we call home! Sign up for your favorite stretch of road ahead of time, or just come on down to the Town Office (note location change from previous years) any time between 9 AM and noon on either day to get a road assignment, a reflective vest, a poker stick, and trash & recycling bags.
Every ten years or so, the town must undergo a process called "revaluation" where a professional assessor looks at every property and determines its current market value. Our last revaluation was in 2015, so we are due, and have hired the professional assessment firm, RCS Assessment Services, to do the job. Please see the RCS Revaluation Informational Flyer for details on their process and how to contact them. The new property values will be reflected in your 2027 tax bill.
The Planning Board and Select Board have been looking at ways to be more consistent about following our own ordinances regarding business regulation for the sake of all residents (and the businesses too!). One requirement of our Building Code Ordinance, is that any businesses that can be seen or sensed from outside a residence (via traffic, lights, noise, smells, stuff, buildings, signs, etc.) are required to obtain a permit and may need to undergo a review with the Planning Board. If you have such a business, and have not done this before, that's okay! But now that you know, please complete our Business Registration Form to find out next steps. For the handful of businesses that have already gone through the process, please fill out the form if your business has expanded since then. Even if you have a business that you think wouldn't require a permit or Planning Board review, we encourage you to complete the form to make sure, and to qualify to be listed on our town website businesses webpage. We field A LOT of requests for referrals, and this is where we send folks!
